Scaling your composition

Hi everyone, a quick point raised by Doris. She asked me why her animation when exported is not sharp. Looking at her .fla I think this is the problem:

This is the overview of her stage in Flash at 100%, that is 640x480 pixels. My first impression is that the girl and the windows (with fish swimming behind) of the main building have jagged lines making it look not good.

Then I zoom in:
And opla'! the girl and the windows are now nice and sharp. This happens when big bitmaps, jpgs, are imported in Flash and then scaled down too much to fit your composition. My solution would be: make a .jpg of of the girl (so you can keep your nice textures) but make the outlines in Illustrator.
You can then import your vector lines, you can just copy-paste from Illustrator directly into Flash, and separately import your jpg. In Flash, put the line on top of the .jpg, and convert them both, F8, into one graphic symbol, that you can reuse in your scenes.

Is also a good idea to do a test and see how thin your lines are when scaled down in Flash. Sometimes you have to thicken the line a bit to make the line more fluent.

Hi everyone, hope you are all 'lekker bezig', nice at work, on your animated projects. I received an SOS email from Benine regarding problems with a walkcycle animation she was working on.
I immediately saw the problem: all of her nice graphics imported from Illustrator have been put on the timeline but she did not turn them into a graphic symbol by pressing the shortcut F8. As a result she has an endless list of 'Tweens' in her library, see above. Ouch.

This can be very time consuming to rectify because she had nicely prepared her walk positions and only at the moment of converting to motion tweens, did she realised that her animation was not working.

So, here are a couple of tips to make sure you don't waist your precious time and get the results you are aiming for:
1) once you have all your body parts in separate layers, 1 graphic per layer, convert each one of them into a graphic, and name it.

Once you have converted them all into graphic symbols select with your cursor on the timeline your keyframe and alt + drag your keyframes, or right click and select 'copy keyframes' and 'paste keyframes' to the next position.
Once all of your keyframes are in the right position on the timeline, slect your keyframes with the cursor and right click 'create classic tweens'.

If you need to shorten or lengthen your animation, select with the cursor in between keyframes and press F5, add keyframes, or Shift F5, to remove keyframes. Want to add an extra keyframe? press F6. Want to remove a keyframe, right click the keyframe on the timeline and select 'Clear keyframe. Want to insert an empty keyframe on the timeline, select your keyframe and press F7.

-Is there a way to prevent this?
( I used web colors, thinking they would probably be the same anywhere.)

Hi everyone, just a quick note to thank you for the productive day and the super good visuals you are producing. We are at the point where you have reached a high level of design, and now is your mission to give justice to your visuals and push it through the final stages of production, which will dictate how your final movie will be seen. If this was the Giro di Italia, you're climbing the last hill, or mountain, before you get to ride downhill in full speed to the finish ;).

I post above a screenshot from After Effects with just some notes about importing sound and making a simple transition, for some reason today in class the 'audio levels' option was not visible. Some of you may find that adding sound in After effects and layer it on top of your final movie/s may be the way to go as the final step bfore rendering your movie. Ok, so stay cool, plan ahead, and who need to sleep anyway right? :)

Guidelines about your Final backgrounds

Hey, just some guidelines on background construction to refresh Henning's presentation last week.

Here's the talented background designer Bradley Gake. Look how he designs the first rough with very bold lines, creating a striking composition, then digitally colors it in black and white to get the light and shadows in place, only then he finalises with the final colors. This process can be done in Illustrator, but Photoshop can also be used.

Look how the perspective and viewpoints are correct but he has designed the buildings playing with scale and stretched them to get this amazing retro future look.
Also Bradley Gake, not a parallel line in sight!!, and the donut is especially for Michiel :) .
He also draws directly in Flash, by putting your drawing on a separate layer you can achieve pretty interesting results, and your file size remains very small.

Ok, I am posting a few pics as Guideline for your final Character designs: basically you should look in your character and design the main poses that you will use in your animation: this model sheet is courtesy of pcweenies.com , don't focus on the style but I would advise you to study how these characters are made, use your architectonic knowledge of volumes, cylinders, circles, etc to make your basic character shapes.

We would like to see a 'turn around', that is your character in front view, 3/4, side, and back.
There is a reason to keep it simple:
These are just examples, if you decide to be more realistic is fine, the same rules apply!!

How to prepare your .swf for import into After Effects

Denise, thank you so much for your reply, I add here below my reply to Hylke's emai about how to prepare your flash files for after effects:

After importing all your flash files
1-make a new composition for each of your swf files and name them with numbers so that you can keep the order of how the movie should play.
2- make a new composition, ctrl-n, and make it 525 x 288 pixels. This is 50% smaller than our movie, and it can be uploaded on the youtube channel.
3- In this MAIN composition put on the timeline all of your compositions which have the sfw in it so that your movie is one string of small compositions. You have to shrink the compositions to fit this smaller size, press shift to keep proportions.
4- on the top layer add any music sound effect you need
5- export, cntrl-m, and in the render queue panel put render settings= best settings, click on output modules and choose quick time, check the audio option, and then in output to choose the folder where you want your movie.
6- press render! it should be ok, will be big but not as big in size as you have now
7-upload on the bbbdelft youtube channel, username bbbdelft, password (to be mailed to you individually)

and don't worry if your movie is big, more than 1 gig, you can still upload it on Youtube!

Je moet de bestanden naar 1 file slepen. Zodat je de stukjes achter elkaar kan plakken.

dan moet je deze file alleen in je render queue zetten. Wanneer je dan weer op het tabblad dat je wilt renderen staat, kun je hem exporteren naar whatever. (ik heb hem naar .mov gedaan maar weet niet of dat de bedoeling is)

And problem 2; When I render my files i end up with files 420MB each!
so the question2: What are the requested render settings for the final movie? Or aren't there any?

Deze weet ik niet zeker, maar ik geloof dat je nog met je flash bestanden werkt (.swf) sleep deze files naar het film-stripje onder in je beeldscherm (wanneer je erop staat komt bij mij inbeeld: create a new composition) Hierdoor worden je bestanden kleiner om mee te werken en heb je minder kans dat je file vast komt te lopen.

echter heb ik gemerkt worden enkele dingen uit flash niet meegenomen wanneer je ze importeerd in After Effects (zoals het loopwerk,geluid e.d.)

ik hoop dat je hier iets wijzer van wordt! Succes!

The problem I run into now is the following

Hi Gwen,
Good to hear you're better :)
If you try to do it in Flash you will get confilcts if the names of your movieclips are the same, amongst other issues, so it is not recommended to compile it in Flash.

Yes, After Effects is the program to compile all your Flash .swf files on one timeline.

You can download a free trial from adobe, then go to file import and import all your sfw files. Then make a new composition size 1050x 576, and put all your swf on the timeline one after the other. After Effects is also good to add any music/ sound effects to your movie. Import them just like the flash files.

Then select your composition name on the timeline, then on the above menu go to Composition, >make movie, in the Render Queue choose Best Settings, and settings and as per Output module Quicktime, Animation compression. Choose in which folder where you want to save your movie and click 'render'.

Here's a basic walkcycle, I thought some of you have a character walking and this is a good start to tweak it for your own animation, please download my .fla

The left arm has a texture, a piece of clothing grabbed from a texture library, that is then masked inside the symbol, in this way you can also create your body parts, just an idea..;)

If you want to move your character across, say from left to right, you can select all the frames and then right click on the highlighted frames and 'copy frames', then make a new symbbol, f8, and then 'paste frames', after that you can drag your symbol on the stage and animate it...

Also for the people working in after effects is possible to animate your character in Flash and then import the .swf into your AE project for the rest of the animation...

The idea was to focus first on this part of the story. When I am satisfied with the result and there is time left, I will (off course) make also the rest of the story! Do you agree?!

-Antoinette asks her husband what he things about her new beautiful acquisitions;
-Boss seems absent and watch indifferently;
-Antoinette start to nag and whine: Boss doesn't spend that much attention to her, ect);
-->she is angry and jumps.

-then a big movement, shock and the workmen's clock starts to freaking out.
-->Boss surprised and Antoinette scared.

-Boss says he has to fix it, as a president of the under workmen's world;
-he is goiing to the lift.

-zoom out, world and city background appears again;
-underworld slide in and is a invert of the upper rich world;
-->you see a dot (the lift) moving from above to down.

-when the lift is nearly down the background turns upside down
-zoom in on lift

-after introducing Boss, the door swings open and Antoinette (wife of Boss) appear with a lot of shopping bags;
-she is exhausted (legs bent and back leaning forward);
-she drops her bags dramatically, when she take her place in front of Boss;
-Boss walks just a little to her;
-Boss gives her a gentle hand kiss, cuddle;
-Antoinette shut her eyes and cheeks glowing.

-zoom in from Seagram window into the office of Boss (see drawing part 3, under middle an under right) smoking his pipe, looking arrogant, relaxed and doing nothing.

-->this is his office: shiny big wooden table, big wooden door (lift), a frame of natural stone and two big clocks. One black and simple: the clock of the workmen (one hand for the 18 hours of work in a day) and a white clock for the upper rich world.
-->parts of my character and their background will be in textures of fabrics.

The first three (start above left, above middle and above right) I will not use. I have to much the feeling of "Eliot Kid". In my intro scene:
-the earth will appear from under;
-the city slides in from right, she jumps back and fore;
-lights behind windows glow up.
-->colors I use are black, white and dark grey/blue;
-->window will be different colors.

-sun slides in from left and city turns into color;
-car driving in and out.
-->car has a texture of fabric

-zoom in on building, building is the Seagram Building of Mies van der Rohe.
